Pause, Breathe, Respond …. Stress Controlled!
Practice this simple technique to take control of your stress levels!
We can’t always eliminate stress, but we can choose how we respond. Learn how to use mindfulness awareness to change your relationship with stress.
Imagine this scenario: It's 4:55 PM, and you're packing up, ready to go home. Suddenly, your boss drops a pile of work on your desk and says it needs to be done before morning.... 😡
1. Identify Your Triggers: Recognise that this situation is a significant stress trigger. Acknowledge the immediate feelings of frustration and overwhelm.
2. Practise Mindfulness: Take a deep breath and ground yourself in the present moment. Remind yourself that reacting impulsively won't help the situation.
3. Pause and Breathe: Before reacting, pause. Breathe deeply and slowly. This simple act can help calm your mind and body, giving you a moment to regain control.
4. Choose Your Response: Instead of reacting with anger or panic, take a moment to consider your options. Could you negotiate for more time? Can you prioritise the tasks to manage them more effectively? Choose a response that aligns with your long-term goals and values.
Remember, while we can’t always eliminate stress, we can change our relationship with it by choosing to respond, rather than react. Find your own unique way of creating space to enable you to pause, take a couple of deep breathes and then mindfully choose your response. It might be as simple as taking a sip of water, popping out of the room, or using the bathroom. The simple act of creating space allows you to be in control of your thoughts and feelings and subsequently your actions and behaviours. Try it out next time your feeling your stress levels rising and see if this approach works for you. Remember it takes time and practice. Good luck!
